Wisdom teeth often need removal when they grow in at an angle (impacted), cause crowding, or emerge only partially. This can lead to pain, uneven teeth, or infections like pericoronitis, caused by trapped food under gum flaps.

Extraction is also necessary for teeth damaged by decay, fractures, or failed root canals. Depending on the case, local or general anesthesia is used. The dentist may cut the gum and remove the tooth whole or in pieces, sometimes using dissolvable stitches to close the area.

After surgery, patients should rest with their head elevated and have someone drive them home. Some bleeding is normal and can be controlled with gauze. Pain medication, ice packs, and cleaning solutions may be provided to support healing.
